Vegan Skincare hmmm.....WHY?
by Sarah Taylor
Did you know that our skin is the largest organ which is made up of several layers? How cool! Have you ever thought much about the role of our skin and its remarkable ability to protect us from harmful diseases, pathogens and unfavourable toxins in our environments? Often, we forget the job it’s playing each and every day. The complexity of our skin is so amazing and worth investing in the time and education to learn how to implement proper skincare routines by using vegan, cruelty-free products.
Alright, alright maybe you’re just warming up to the idea of adopting a vegan skincare routine because it’s more in line with your values, or maybe you are a vegan skincare pro. Either way, you’ve come to the place where all are welcome. We are happy you’re here, so let’s dive in!
What specifically is considered vegan?
Someone who describes themselves as vegan means they follow a meat-free and animal byproduct-free diet. Yes, sorry no chocolate milk! But that doesn’t mean vegans are forbidden from enjoyment. Hands up for chocolate almond milk- I challenge you to give it a try!
Just as there is no consumption of meat or animal products, vegan skincare follows the same guidelines, however it can get a bit confusing. We’re here to be your go-to source in providing you with some much needed clarity!
Firstly, let’s make it simple, there’s no need to complicate things. No animal byproducts, no animal derived animal ingredients, no A.N.I.M.A.L.S. The products forgo animal-derived ingredients in the creation of the products. Your typical, conventional skincare products probably include honey, gelatin, collagen, lanolin, allantoin, keratin or beeswax. Vegan products do not. You’d be surprised what other animal- derived ingredients are hidden in conventional products such as silk or carmine, which is a colour sourced from beetles. Additionally, many conventional products may have ethically derived ingredients, but often times are not animal free. There are many vegan, cruelty free skincare alternatives to these animal-derived ingredients that provide the same or even greater benefits.
How about cruelty-free?
This leads to the question of cruelty- free. So it’s a vegan product, therefore its cruelty-free, right? Nope! Cruelty-free means the ingredients or product has not been tested on animals. Interestingly, you can have a product that is not vegan, but cruelty free and even ethically sourced. Or you can have a vegan product that has been tested on animals and therefore not considered cruelty-free. Actually, this is pretty common. Clinical trial testing is expensive which is why many companies turn to animal testing for its cheap and easy to achieve, rapid results, bypassing numerous trials. It’s recorded that millions of animals every year fall subject to trials which impose numerous physical and psychological distresses on the animals. Let’s let those cute pups and bunnies be!
So is Vegan skincare really better for me?
YES! And it’s better for the environment, too! Companies focus on being conscious of the environmental impact and maintain the respect animals deserve. While keeping in mind the positive environmental impacts, using vegan, preservative-free products are incredibly beneficial for the skin. Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of vegan products will have your skin thanking you for using real, natural, simple ingredients. I don’t know about you, but we’d rather use products that are naturally occurring and gentle on the skin, knowing there was no harm done to an animal, while maintaining minimal impact on the environment.
It’s also important to note that if you have sensitive skin, using vegan products are going to be very healing and protective of your skin. Plants provide us with some of the most vitamins and minerals, so using them to craft our skincare products mean we are delivering you with maximum nutrients that you couldn’t find in conventional products. The vitamins and minerals absorbed from the products will have your skin glowing with health!
When it comes to swapping out your beauty products for some vegan ones, remember keep it simple! Just a few new, naturally-derived, vegan, cruelty-free ingredient products can make a world of a difference. While it may take some time for your body to get used to new products, overall, when using these on your skin, you’ll feel better inside, too. No matter what, be gentle with yourself as it’s important to embrace the skin you have, flaws and all. The best thing you can do now for your skin is to protect and care for it with the most natural products you can.
Hopefully we’ve provided you with some clarity and a greater understanding of the benefits of using cruelty-free, vegan products which ultimately have a low environmental impact and provide many vitamins and minerals necessary for radiant, beautiful skin!
